Gregson Lane Cricket Club
The club was established in 1948 originally playing in the Chorley League but having been refused promotion to the top division, despite winning the league on several occasions, the club applied for entry into the Palace Shield. In 1953 the application was successful, the second team leaving the Chorley League & joining them a few years later.
Presently we field 3 senior teams & 1 junior team but not too many years ago we had 4 junior teams at under 11s, under 13s, under15s & under 17s – a situation we hope to achieve again and as our under 10s progress we hope to fill the missing age group with new starters.
In recent years our fortunes have fluctuated somewhat with promotions & relegations but we are again in the ascendancy & full of hope of further success with the 1st team winning the league & the 2nd team in the top half after being promoted the season before. The Sunday team, which is made up of under 21s, occasional cricketers & those who can’t play Saturdays, finished 2nd but this is a team built on enthusiasm, the love of the game and the desire to have fun.
The facilities have often been the centre of criticism despite the tireless work of us hardy folk but regardless of the hardships endured (violins please) the club has retained an excellent spirit & is still truly a proper village club with many of its current players coming through junior teams, albeit in different eras.
A majority of players or family members have played here for over 30 years & quite a few of us go back longer than that !!!
With the building of a new play area & the initiative started by the Hall for All & now Gregson Green it is a boost for the area and Gregson Lane Cricket Club supports it 100%.
On behalf of the club & personally I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been or are still involved with the project. As they say up north th’as doin’ a grand job.
